Solving common scalp concerns | Dermatologist-designed care

Scalp health and hair health go hand in hand. And, while it’s natural to focus more on what’s happening to hair, keeping your scalp in prime condition is the #1 way to keep both happy.

Of course, like the rest of skin, scalps are affected by a host of conditions - from flakes, itching or inflammation to hair loss. Here, we discuss the five most common scalp concerns seen among our customers, shedding light on likely causes and advising how to best treat them.

1. Dandruff

Dandruff is a form of Seborrheic Dermatitis, though non-inflammatory, non-contagious and harmless. However, its itchiness and oily white flakes (a build-up of dead skin) are frustrating. Dandruff is thought to be caused by a yeast-like fungus present on all scalps, called Malassezia globosa. With the right shampoo, it’s possibly the easiest scalp concern to overcome.

Softening Scalp Shampoo has been dermatologist-designed to be low-foaming - ideal for scalps prone to dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, as well as psoriasis. Its gently purifying, 100% natural formula contains Cordyceps, a renowned yet rare herb, plus Ginseng, Ginger and Lavender Oil. Itching and inflammation ease, flakes clear and scalp and hair feel beautifully clean. Our tip? Once massaged in, leave on this shampoo for 10-15 minutes before rinsing away.

2. Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a chronic form of eczema. It occurs on the scalp due to the abundance of sebaceous glands, presenting as red, itchy, flaky, oily and sometimes scaly patches. In babies we call it cradle cap; in adulthood it’s common in those also prone to acne, rosacea or psoriasis.

As with dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be caused by an excess of Malassezia globosa fungus and the resulting inflammatory response of the immune system. In adults, it can continue for years in a cycle of flare-ups and clearing, which is why managing it from the moment you notice symptoms is key to quickly restoring comfort.

Use Softening Scalp Shampoo three times a week, making sure you massage it in then leave on your scalp and hair for 10-15 minutes before rinsing away.

3. Scalp Psoriasis

As discussed in our ‘Spotlight On | Psoriasis’ article, scalp psoriasis is a chronic, long-term and inflammatory dermatological condition where skin cells grow at a faster-than-normal rate. It appears in the form of a build-up of hot, itchy, sore and crusty plaques or scales.

While its cause is unknown, there are theories around hereditary and immune system links, as well as triggers from stress, cold weather, alcohol and prescription medicines. No cure has been found, though symptoms can be very successfully managed with the right topical treatments.

Switch to our dermatologically formulated Softening Scalp Shampoo and, each evening, massage Softening Scalp Tincture into affected areas. 100% natural, this potent herbal tincture combines Ku Shen, Larch, San Leng and Monnier's Snowparsley Fruit Extracts. Heat and bacteria clear, dry patches are moisturised and a calm, comfortable scalp is restored.

4. Atopic Eczema

Atopic Eczema is the most common form of eczema and another chronic, long-term and inflammatory dermatological condition, appearing as dry, cracked, sore or itchy patches of skin. Its cause is unknown, though it is linked to allergen sensitivities and known triggers include some soaps and detergents as well as stress, certain food and the weather.

Our specialised Nourishing Hair & Scalp Oil is formulated for scalps prone to atopic eczema and will help soothe sore skin, revitalise dryness, improve scalp tone and stimulate skin renewal. Each evening, pour a little Nourishing Hair & Scalp Oil into hands, then massage into affected areas on a clean, dry scalp. Remember to pop on a shower cap to avoid oil getting on bed linen.

5. Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune hair loss condition, often triggered by stress, illness or an accident. It causes the immune system to (wrongly) attack hair follicles, believing them to be viruses or bacteria. The follicles become smaller, shed hair and bald patches begin to appear.

Reassuringly, alopecia areata isn’t permanent. Once the cause is dealt with, regrowth will happen, though it will take time. Help boost its recovery with some targeted topical treatments.

Nourishing Hair & Scalp Oil is formulated with active Chinese herbs and plant oils, including Redroot and Chamomile Extracts, Bisabolol, Vitamin A and ProVitamin B5 with organic Rosemary Essential Oil. Massaged into a clean, dry scalp each evening, it helps soothe, revitalise and stimulate cell regeneration.
