Dermatologist tips | Safe skincare for Tweens

Skincare advice has never been more accessible. Whether it’s from a favourite influencer, TikTok ad or Instagram live, we are inundated with complicated routines packed full of multiple steps and intense ingredients.

However, in the world of filters, paid advertisements, and the sheer amount of beauty products that are being reviewed, this advice is not always positive… or even truthful.

Here our founder, Dr. Mazin, dermatologist for over 4 centuries, shines a light on tween skincare, sharing 3 easy habits that we can start from a young age to keep skin healthy and clear.

1. Keep it simple

A gentle cleanse, a light moisturiser, SPF in sunlight… that’s it!

When it comes to tween skincare, Dr.Mazin advises to keep it simple. Excessive, 10-step skincare routines are rarely required at any age, let alone when so young. Before and during our teenage years, skin hygiene on the face and body should be the only focus.

Dr. Mazin recommends cleansing each morning and evening with a gentle cleanser, applying a light moisturiser when needed, and always remembering to pop on a broad-spectrum SPF on sunny days.

However, what happens if you or your child is experiencing a sensitised skin condition?

“If experiencing eczema, psoriasis, acne or ichthyosis, this is the time to add one or two specialised skin products to the simple cleanse, moisturise, SPF routine.”

Dr.Mazin’s picks for tween-safe skincare:

Honeysuckle Cleanser – the ideal partner for all skin types, young, ageing, balanced or imbalanced. This soap-free, fragrance-free formula contains naturally-derived cleansers Coconut and sustainable Palm Oil, meaning you can confidently use it no matter how your complexion feels.

Nourishing Cream – a blend of antioxidants, Aloe Vera, Chamomile and Bisabolol hydrates dry, irritated, or dehydrated skins. Perfect for face and body, this soft pink cream has won multiple awards within mother and baby categories for its gentle yet potent soothing effects.

Soothing Bath & Shower Oil – gentle enough to use even on baby skin. This fragrance-free formula is packed full of naturally derived cleansers and nourishing plant ingredients such as Jojoba Seed Oil and Liquorice Root Extract. Skin is left clean, soft and calm.

2. Keep it natural

Dr. Mazin strongly recommends sticking to calming, nourishing, natural ingredients when it comes to young skin.

Soaps, synthetic fragrance, and lab-made actives should be avoided entirely. These ingredients are known to cause skin reactions at every age but for young skins, they can be particularly detrimental. Making minor blemishes worse and dehydrating naturally beautiful complexions.

We want to keep all skins clean and calm, particularly when young. To ensure this, we directly source each natural ingredient ourselves and keep all our formulations free from synthetic nasties, SLS, SLES, parabens, silicones, and petrochemicals.

3. Keep it safe

Young, healthy skin is beautiful and in no need of brightening, tightening or lifting. It is extremely important to note that excessive use of harsh or “adult” ingredients has a damaging effect on young skins.

Retinol, niacinamide, acids – these are all ingredients that if used incorrectly or too soon, can lead to a host of skincare issues for tweens. Eroding self-confidence and creating an inner belief that their skin is not “good” or that they are ageing prematurely.

Dr. Mazin reminds us that like everything in the body, our skin holds memories. When it gets used to reactionary flare-ups from a young age, this will be the blueprint it follows as it inevitably comes into contact with other irritants.

A final note from our founder:

In summary, our founder and dermatologist Dr. Mazin advises tweens to “please, not over-do it.”

When we are young, our skin barrier is incredibly adept at balancing itself. Plenty of exercise, prioritising a healthy nutritious, colourful diet and reducing sugar intake are the most beneficial ways of enhancing the skin’s appearance from the inside out.

We want to teach our children, tweens and teens, to have a healthy, happy image of their appearance. The complexion plays a huge part in self-confidence making it even more important to follow the above advice, avoiding costly and potentially harmful skincare routines too soon.
